Reasons for Removal of an Eye
Eye removal is often performed when other options have been exhausted. During a consultation for eye removal surgery Philadelphia facial surgeon Dr. Morgenstern will go over your options, eye removal may be performed on an outpatient basis or it may require brief hospitalization. The surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia.
Removal of an eye may be performed for any of the following reasons:
- Chronic and persistent pain due to increased pressure or inflammation in a blind eye
- Traumatic injury to the eye where the eye cannot be preserved.
- Severe infection that poses a risk to adjoining tissues
- Tumor removal and prevention of spreading cancer such as in cases of intraocular eye melanoma or retinoblastoma
- Cosmetically unacceptable blind eye that interferes with physical or social considerations
