If you are interested in the most effective, long-term facial rejuvenation results, then a facelift may be right for you.

A facelift works deep below the surface of your skin, creating a more youthful facial appearance that lasts many years. Facelifts are sometimes combined with other aesthetic facial procedures or non-surgical treatments for optimal results. Our oculo facial plastic surgeons are extremely experienced in various facelift techniques and can help you decide if the procedure can accomplish your cosmetic goals.

Facelift Before & Afters

A facelift can soften many signs of aging, such as:

  • Sagging skin in the lower two-thirds of the face
  • Jowling along the jaw
  • Folds extending from the corners of your nose to your mouth
  • Descended cheeks
  • Loose skin falling beneath the chin

If you are experiencing any of the signs you may benefit from a facelift, our facial surgeons can help you decide if it will meet your expectations. Facelifts have dramatic rejuvenation results that look natural because the procedure tightens tissue beneath your skin, and removes loose, extra skin and fat.

This procedure makes your skin look firmer and smoother. The contours of your face will be better defined, including the contour of your jaw line. A number of studies have shown that patients continue to look several years younger for a long time after facelift surgery. Although, even the best facelift Philadelphia has to offer cannot stop the aging process, it does restore a younger facial appearance than you would have otherwise. You will experience facial sagging and wrinkles in the years after your facelift surgery, but it will not be to the extent that it would have been if you had not had a facelift.

  • You are dissatisfied with wrinkles, lines and folds on your face.
  • You are unhappy with the sagging, drooping quality of the skin on your face.
  • You want to restore more youthful facial characteristics.
  • You have jowls hanging from your jaw line.
  • The fat pads on your cheeks have descended.
  • You have a double chin from drooping skin.
  • Skin is sagging in the lower two-thirds of your face.

If any of these conditions apply to you, then rhytidectomy can restore a younger appearance by removing and tightening loose skin, fat and muscle in your face.

Signs a Facelift is Right For You

The only way to know for sure if a facelift is the right procedure for you is to visit one of the best Philadelphia facelift surgeons, Dr Morgenstern. After discussing what you want to change and learning about all of your options, you will then feel more confident in choosing the rejuvenation procedures that work for you. Indications that rhytidectomy could be right for you include:

  • You have realistic expectations of what the procedure can accomplish and what it cannot accomplish.
  • You want to turn back the clock on the signs of aging.
  • You want results that are long-term.

This type of facial rejuvenation makes you look years younger for many years in the future. But it is important to know that a facelift cannot stop the aging process.

There are many different facelift techniques that skilled surgeons can utilize during facelift surgery.

Facelift Philadelphia

These techniques have different outcomes and recoveries, and allow surgeons to customize the procedure to the patient, producing the results you expect. Our surgeons and professional staff will also be helping you with the planning for your facelift recovery. Dr. Morgenstern performs the three main types of facelift surgery:

  • Short-Scar FaceLift
  • S lift
  • Deep Plane Facelift

These techniques differ by where the incisions are located, and by the extent to which tissues are repositioned, removed and tightened. A certain technique will be used depending on the extent of skin sagging and the specific areas you want to rejuvenate. In your personalized consultation with one of our facial surgeons, you will discuss what you would like to change about your face, and which facelift techniques can accomplish your facial rejuvenation goals, as well as the cost and investment in facelift surgery.

Benefits of a Short Scar Facelift include:

  • Shorter recovery than a traditional facelift
  • Removes jowls and tightens the chin and jawline
  • A minimally-invasive procedure that offers subtle results
  • Fewer scars that are easier for the surgeon to hide

When you come in for a consultation, you may well be happy with your overall appearance, but have one or two things you would like to fix, like prominent jowls or a jawline that has become just a bit too soft. A short scar facelift, in addition to minimizing the facial incisions the surgeon makes, allows you to fix these.

A short scar facelift will not be as transformative as a full facelift, but you may find that is a good thing. You may find that people who know you will mention that you look "well rested," or ask if you've lost weight, but won't suspect that you've had surgery.

Benefits of an S-Lift Facelift include:

  • Limited incisions improve your recovery time
  • Gives your neck and lower face a consistent look
  • Can remove "turkey wattle" or reduce a double chin
  • Noticeable results with minimal invasiveness

While the results of a short scar lift focus mostly on the lower face and jawline, you may find that the procedure doesn't do enough to tighten your neck. If you have a good deal of excess neck skin, you may want to consider an S-Lift, which uses the same incision as a short scar lift, but brings it further down the neck. This allows the surgeon to better tighten the skin underneath your jaw.

While you may grimace at the sight of wrinkles in the corners of your eyes or nose, the first major signs of aging tend to come from the broad, smooth parts of your face: the forehead, the cheeks, and the neck. S-Lift procedures address two of these areas, allowing you to benefit from a facelift while minimizing your recovery time.

Benefits of a deep plane facelift include:

  • Makes you look younger while preserving your natural look
  • Smooths your whole face, not just the lower part
  • Incisions are hidden beneath your hairline
  • Long-lasting results

If you are anything like the average Philadelphia facelift patient, your biggest concern about the procedure is how long it will last. This makes sense: if you get a major facial surgery done, you don't want to be back in the operating room a few years later. A deep plane facelift addresses these concerns by tightening several layers of skin and facial muscle, allowing for more transformative, longer-lasting results.

If the face you see in the mirror every morning has started to look more like your parent's than your own, if you find yourself staring at wrinkles and wishing they would go away, the deep plane facelift is for you. This surgery allows you to age more gracefully, all while preserving your face's expressiveness and highlighting your natural beauty. Facelifts can be combined with a neck lift for truly transformative results.

Well in advance of your surgical appointment, our staff will have provided you with all the instructions you need to have a successful recovery. These instructions typically include:

  • Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and bruising
  • Do not exercise strenuously or lift anything heavy for the first few weeks
  • Do not wash your hair or face in the shower until your surgeon has cleared it
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking, which delay healing

If you are prescribed pain medications, you will have filled your prescription ahead of time. Our cosmetic facial surgeons and our staff will make sure you do not have any more questions about your recovery and we will provide you with contact information should you have any questions during your recovery period.

Some patients combine their facelift in Philadelphia with liposuction, CO2 laser, brow lift, neck lift or eyelid surgery. Such surgical combinations may or may not influence your recovery experience. Combining procedures could mean you will have a little additional swelling in various areas of your face.

Our patients are released to go home the same day as their surgery. Everyone has a different experience of recovery, and influencing factors include what type of facelift was performed.

You will have previously arranged for someone to drive you home after the surgery. Our patients find it very helpful to have a spouse, family member or friend stay with them for at least 24 hours to provide assistance to allow you to rest. You should also prepare for your recovery before your surgery day by making ready your home. Get a comfy spot prepared with pillows, blankets, music, movies or anything else to help you rest and relax. Get all your meals planned for ahead of time.

You can expect swelling after your procedure. The swelling is most pronounced for the first 24 to 48 hours. After a week, a lot of the swelling should go down. Some amount of subtle swelling may persist for several weeks. By six weeks most people can already see an amazing difference showing off a more youthful and natural look. Over the next several months to a year, your tissues will continue to heal and a fully healed and youthful appearance will be finalized.
