Types of Eye Revision Surgery

Eyelid revision surgery can be a bigger challenge than the initial surgery. Here is what a blepharoplasty correction surgery can do:

  • Revises “under corrected” eyelid surgery by correcting a previous procedure that resulted in too much extra skin or fat
  • Fixes ptosis or drooping eyelids
  • Rectifies “overdone” eyelid surgery in which too much skin and/or fat was removed (eyes look unnatural)

Top 8 Reasons You Need an Eye Revision Surgery

Here are eight reasons why you may need an eye revision surgery:

  • Asymmetrical Eye: If too much skin or fat was taken out from under your eye or in the upper lid in a first surgery, you may end up with an unbalanced appearance. The unnatural look can be adjusted by realigning things and restore the previous symmetry and/or making sure the eyelids match in heights.
  • Changing Eye Look: In the original surgery, the outer corner of the eye was cut in such a way that the eye looks and feels different.
  • Droopy Eyelids: In the original eyelid surgery, there was too little skin removed and possibly the muscle that lifts the eyelid was not tightened giving you a tired appearance. A revision surgery addresses the problem by tightening the levator muscle that lifts your upper eyelid which will make you look younger.
  • Eye Contour: The result from an original eyelid surgery was an unsatisfactory shape of the eye creating distortion and/or a sagging lower lid showing too much of the white of your eye. A revision surgery alters your eye contour for a more natural shape and appearance.
  • Hollow Appearances: If too much fat was excised from your lower eyelids in the first surgery, it can lead to your eyes looking hollow and sunken making you appear tired or even sick. An eye revision surgery can restore the volume to your eyelids for a more youthful appearance.
  • Lower Lid Retraction: In the revision surgery, the lower eyelid is pulled down to modify the shape of the eye.
  • Lumps and Bumps: In the original surgery, fat grafting created lumps, bumps and contour issues.
  • Shutting Eyes: A previous surgery could have resulted in having too much skin taken out of your upper lids, which makes it difficult to shut your eyes completely. This uncomfortable problem can be amended by using skin grafts to let your eyes shut and blink properly.

On rare occasions, other effects on the eyes can result in abnormal coloring of the eyelids, abnormal folding of the eyelid skin, dry eyes, inability to completely close your eyes and possible loss of vision.

How is the Recovery?

A small bandage may be applied to your eyes and you can use an ice pack for comfort and help bring down the swelling, which can last for a couple of weeks. For the first week after your surgery, you should clean the eye area and use any drops given to you to lubricate your eyes. You should also avoid using makeup and contact lenses.
