Signs of aging can dramatically affect the forehead.

Exposure to sunlight, the effects of gravity, loss of skin elasticity and other factors can all cause the brow to sag downward. A brow lift is a facial rejuvenation procedure that restores a smoother, tighter brow.

Real Patient Before & Afters

A brow lift generally addresses the following aesthetic concerns:

  • Folds across the forehead
  • Sagging brow skin
  • Drooping brow that is pushing down on the eyebrows and causing hooded eyelids
  • Lines between the eyebrows (frown lines)

Your brow lift procedure will be customized to the outcomes you want to achieve.

A brow lift rejuvenates the upper third of the face, primarily the forehead, brow line and upper eyelids. It softens the horizontal wrinkles stretching across the forehead, as well as lines high on the bridge of the nose and vertical lines between the eyebrows. This procedure also lifts the eyebrows to a younger-looking position. Brow lift surgery can lift sagging upper eyelids, if the forehead is pushing down on the eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery is another way to reduce hooded, sagging eyelids.

The first step in determining whether a brow lift or eyelid surgery is better suited to your goals is to discuss your wishes with one of our experienced cosmetic surgeons. Depending on what you would like to change about your facial appearance, our facial surgeons can determine your surgical options. Generally, the differences between these two procedures can be summed up in the following ways:

  • Eyelid surgery: Removes and re-shapes eyelid skin and tissue to address sagging or puffy upper eyelids, bags beneath the eyes, and other effects of aging eyelids.
  • Brow lift surgery: Addresses the effects of aging in the upper third of the face, such as deep lines across the forehead and sagging eyebrows.

Generally, upper eyelid surgery reduces sagging and puffy upper eyelids. When your eyelids become this way, you may have trouble seeing clearly and applying eye makeup. If the cause of the sagging comes from excess, baggy eyelid skin, then eyelid surgery may be a good option. But sometimes the eyelid skin appears puffy because the forehead has begun to sag and to push down on the brow, causing skin to descend above your eyes. In such cases, a brow lift may be appropriate.

For some patients, it makes sense to combine both of these facial rejuvenation procedures. During your consultation with one of our facial cosmetic surgeons, your surgeon will help you narrow down your options by discussing the following factors and others with you:

  • What you want to change about your facial appearance
  • What you expect of surgery and surgical recovery
  • How long you want the results to last

Even within the broader surgical categories of brow lift and eyelid surgery, there are various techniques Dr. Ken Morgenstern and Dr. Joseph Giacometti may use to get the desired result and the result that's right for your skin. For example, upper and lower eyelid surgery can be combined, and the brow lift may be performed as a mid-forehead lift, direct brow lift or endoscopic brow lift. As such, the only way to know for sure which procedure is right for you is to visit our surgeons for a consultation. We are personally committed to finding the options that work best for you and that provide results that make you feel confident and youthful.

An endoscope is a surgical video device. Using an endoscope allows a surgeon to use smaller incisions and see the surgical area on a monitor.

The endoscopic technique often results in a shorter, less uncomfortable recovery. Some patients return to work within a week after this type of brow lift surgery.

Using an endoscope, our surgeons can perform a brow lift that:

  • Is less invasive
  • Allows for the most minimal incisions and resulting scars
  • Raises the eyebrows and forehead
  • Softens the lines between the eyebrows

Besides endoscopy, there are several other surgical brow lift techniques. Some of these techniques are:

  • Direct brow lift
  • Browpexy
  • Mid-forehead lift
  • Pre-hairline lift

These techniques differ in incision location and the exact procedural steps. But the goal of all of our cosmetic brow lift techniques is the same: to create a refreshed, youthful appearance by smoothing the skin of the upper third of the face and by lifting the brows and forehead to a more youthful position.

Many of our patients are dissatisfied with the way a sagging brow makes them look old, tired, angry or unhappy. The appearance of your face can have a profound effect on the way people read your emotions. By rejuvenating the brow, forehead and eyelids, one can improve the lines of their face to be softer, relaxed and refreshed - an altogether more youthful appearance.

There are a variety of ways Dr. Morgenstern and Dr. Giacometti can perform this facial procedure. Before they decide on an approach, they must assess your face and its underlying structures.

In all cases, our experienced facial surgeons will prioritize creating incisions that are as minimal as possible and well-concealed. Your incisions, once healed, should not be overly apparent. What will start as a red, raised scar should flatten and fade over time.

Once they determine how and why you are experiencing sagging and other changes, they can then decide how best to restore a firmer, smoother brow. In general, two of the most common incision methods are the following:

  • Endoscopic incisions: The great thing about the endoscopic technique is the minimal scarring. Several small incisions will be placed within the hairline.
  • Coronal incisions:These incisions are usually a little longer, extending across the scalp within the hairline.

You will need to take time to rest, recover and relax after your procedure. It's important to your body's ability to heal. Brow lifts can vary slightly by patient, so we will provide you with custom after-care instructions in advance of your surgical appointment.

Typically, these are some of the things you can expect from recovery:

  • Is less invasive
  • Allows for the most minimal incisions and resulting scars
  • Raises the eyebrows and forehead
  • Softens the lines between the eyebrows

You can extend the results by protecting your face from the sun, moisturizing and not smoking. These things will keep your skin healthy and prevent the recurrence of skin sagging in the years down the road.

The finalized results should take shape about 6 months after the procedure. The aging process will continue to affect the firmness of your brow, but you will have essentially turned back the hands of time on the appearance of your face. Many people report that the lines across their brow are permanently softened, and never return to their former severity.

There are many things that may influence the final cost of your procedure. The only way to get an estimate is to visit us for a consultation. We'll make sure you have a complete picture of how much a brow lift will cost, which is influenced by:

  • Surgical fees
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Health screening tests
  • Cost of prescription medications
  • Cost of post-surgical garments

In certain instances, a brow lift may be covered by health insurance. It all depends on whether the insurance company deems the procedure "medically necessary." When your brow sags, it may sag so severely that your field of vision is obstructed. In such circumstances, the insurance company may decide a brow lift is necessary to restore your vision. Our staff will help you verify your coverage.

We also offer financing plans at Morgenstern Center. You can apply for one of the plans we accept through CareCredit.

Your consultation with one of our experienced, caring surgeons is the only way to find out if you are a good candidate for a brow lift.
