Micro Needles, Massive Results

When we were young, a scraped knee would heal seemingly in minutes. We could laugh all day and never see a wrinkle.

As we grow older, our skin begins to lose its taut, firm, strong appearance. The sun starts to leave its mark in the effect of wrinkles, dryness, and sunspots, Even scars don’t seem to fade the way they used to. Thankfully, the surgeons at the Philadelphia-based Morgenstern Center offer a solution that can restore that refreshed, youthful appearance, or even clear up and heal scar tissue –microneedling.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that has been in practice for more than 20 years and is used to stimulate the body’s natural healing process and built-in repair mechanisms.

It does this by creating microscopic, controlled punctures into the skin, which kickstarts an increase of collagen and other healing factors, allowing the skin to retain a youthful, firm, smooth and elastic texture.

Additionally, the microchannels that microneedling creates allows for topical gels, creams, and serums to be absorbed more effectively, further enhancing their effects in the deeper layers of your skin.

Is Microneedling Right for Me?

Microneedling is intended to help improve skin issues such as acne, hair loss, dark spots on the skin, large pores, stretch marks, sun damage, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Not only is it less expensive than laser treatments, but it is also ideal for people with darker skin tones as it does not rely on heat, the way laser treatments do (which can affect your skin’s pigmentation). We require that any patient interested in receiving treatment needs to have a consultation with one of our Lancaster microneedling experts prior to the surgery.

How Does Microneedling Work?

As we grow older, our skin’s ability to produce collagen in the skin begins to deteriorate, which leads to wrinkles and various signs of aging. Our smooth, supple skin tends to lose elastin and collagen, and the strength and elasticity of our skin visibly fade.

Microneedling, at its core, causes microscopic trauma to our skin – this trauma signals to our body to pump up the amount of collagen it is producing. With this increased collagen comes the firmness, tautness, and support of youthful skin.

It is not only age that affects our body’s collagen production, either – other factors such as acne scarring, stretch marks, and other scars can also cause collagen loss. These issues can all be improved by microneedling, one of the safest and most effective ways to rejuvenate one’s skin and treat scars and wrinkles.

The Microneedling Treatment Process

Simply put, microneedling is the process of inserting very fine, short needles into the skin. This can sound intimidating, but these puncture sites are merely surface-level deep. Some of our Lancaster microneedling patients request a numbing gel to be applied prior to treatment.

Microneedling treatments are commonly performed in a series of 4 to 6 sessions, about a month apart. This is because after the skin becomes thicker after each session, needles are able to subsequently be inserted deeper, allowing for maximum repair and healing.

What to Expect During Microneedling Treatment

Prior to receiving microneedling treatment, you will want to cease usage of any intense topical treatments, as harsh products could aggravate the skin. In addition to having a cleansed and toned face, you should also avoid using retinol for at least two days prior to the treatment and avoid sun exposure for about three days prior and following the procedure. A topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment areas, after which our provider will begin with the microneedling process of rolling the derma roller on the areas of skin to be treated. By making tiny columns in the skin, the body will immediately begin to make new collagen, filling the treatment areas and healing them.

The entire microneedling process usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Upon completion, a serum will be spread on your face. To find out more about the procedure, contact us to arrange a consultation with one of our aesthetic experts in microneedling in Lancaster.

What to Expect After Microneedling

Immediately following the procedure, you will notice a bright redness to your skin – this can last for up to 2 to 4 days, but most patients completely heal within 24 hours. Your skin will retain a youthful glow, and visible changes will make themselves known over the next several weeks. Results can continue to improve and show for up to 6 months after treatment.

It is recommended that our Lancaster microneedling patients receive a series of 2 or 3 treatments, spaced about 2 to 3 months apart for maximum results. For patients with more significant skin-care concerns, such as acne scars, it is often recommended that they receive 6 to 8 sessions at 6-week intervals to receive the maximum benefits from the procedure.

Results from the procedure are not visible immediately, because your body will continue to lay down new collagen for approximately 3 to 6 months after the treatment.
