Thyroid Eye Disease

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) is a condition in which there is an overproduction of thyroid hormones.  People with an overactive thyroid gland may experience changes around their eyes.  The most common abnormalities are prominent eyes, a staring expression and infrequent blinking.  In addition, people who have an overactive thyroid gland may experience pressure around the eyes, ocular irritation, and tearing.  Although less common, people with normal thyroid levels or low thyroid levels my experience similar symptoms.

Some treatments for thyroid eye disease include the use of a topical lubricant, wrap-around tinted glasses, sleeping with eye shield and with the head elevated.  If active inflammation is present, oral cortisone or other anti-inflammatory medications may be necessary.  Various surgical procedures may also help to alleviate the symptoms of thyroid Eye Disease.  For instance, surgery may be performed to remove the puffiness around the eyes, raise or lower eyelids, or even sculpt the bones around the eyes to help protect vision or improve overall appearance.
