Dr. Joseph Giacometti's area of expertise is oculo-facial plastic surgery (plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery of the eyes and surrounding structures). His background includes extensive training in oculofacial plastic surgery and ophthalmological surgery.
Dr. Giacometti's intensive training background in oculo-facial plastic surgery has provided him with the knowledge and expertise to treat various medical and surgical problems involving the eyelids, face, eye socket, and tear drainage system. Using his specialized skill set, Dr. Giacometti can help improve both the appearance and function of these structures.
Dr. Giacometti is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Giacometti actively contributes to his field, having authored several journal articles as well as presenting at various national meetings. In addition, during his training, he was closely involved with teaching residents and medical students.
Dr. Giacometti grew up in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he attended Scranton Preparatory School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He remained in Philadelphia for medical school and obtained his MD from Jefferson Medical College, where he served as President of the Duane Ophthalmology Society and was the recipient of the Dr. Arthur J. and Helen M. Horvat Foundation Scholarship.
He then moved to Connecticut and completed his residency training in ophthalmology & visual science at Yale University, where he served as chief resident during his final year of training. While at Yale, Dr. Giacometti was also active in the politics surrounding medicine. He served on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and was an Advocacy Ambassador Representative at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Mid-Year Forum on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
Following residency, Dr. Giacometti completed a competitive, highly-specialized 2-year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at The Cullen Eye Institute of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During this fellowship, sponsored by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Giacometti honed his skills in all aspects of oculo-facial plastic surgery.
Dr. Giacometti is actively involved in medical education at Wills Eye Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he works closely with ophthalmology residents both in clinic and in the operating room.
Dr. Giacometti joined Dr. Morgenstern and his outstanding staff at the Morgenstern Center in 2014. He is happy to provide excellent care to the diverse patient population in the Philadelphia area and New Jersey.
