Aging, as well as the effects of gravity, sun exposure and weight fluctuations, can all lead to loss of volume in your cheeks. Shapely cheeks can begin to descend as you age, causing deep facial folds, hollows beneath your eyes and an overall aged and tired appearance. What is a Cheek Lift or Midface Lift?
A cheek lift procedure has the ultimate goal of creating a youthful appearance by improving the fullness and projection of the cheeks. When you are young, your face has volume. The fat in your cheeks creates a full facial shape with cheeks that project outward. When you grow older, the fat pads in your cheeks begin to descend, causing loss of volume and deep facial folds. The cheeks are no longer positioned perkily on the cheekbone, and the sagging skin and fat cause hollows and dark circles beneath your eyes.
Cheek lift candidates may be looking to rejuvenate:
- Sagging cheeks
- Loss of youthful cheek projection
- Sagging skin around the middle area of the face
- Nasolabial folds extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth
- Volume loss below the eyes
- Dark circles and hollows beneath the eyes
By restoring youthful volume to the cheeks and under-eye area, you can look years younger. Cheeks can also be restored with dermal injections and soft-tissue fillers, although these treatments provide temporary results while surgical options produce results that can last many years.
Cheek Lift Procedures and Techniques
The main surgical way of performing a cheek lift is through a midface lift. Like a face lift, the midface lift repositions fat and skin through small incisions along the hairline or near the ears. The fat pad is lifted and repositioned over the cheek bone. Sometimes the procedure is combined with lower eyelid surgery to create a more youthful eye area.
In certain cases, cheek implants or injectable soft-tissue fillers may be used to augment the cheek and create fullness. Sometimes a tear trough augmentation is necessary. A tear trough deformity causes deep hollows and dark circles beneath the eyes, and an implant or an injectable may be used to fill out this area. You and Dr. Morgenstern or Dr. Giacometti will discuss all of your cosmetic options for restoring youthful facial fullness and cheeks.
