When the area around your eyes begins to age, it can make you look tired and older than you feel.

Blepharoplasty returns the eye area to a more youthful appearance. A blepharoplasty is sometimes medically necessary if droopy upper eyelids or a sagging brow is interfering with your vision. During your consultation with the eyelid surgeons in our Wayne office, they will guide you and evaluate whether your eyelid concerns need Aesthetic Surgery or Reconstructive Surgery.

A Blepharoplasty (also called eyelid surgery) is a procedure to rejuvenate the area around the eyes. If you have droopy eyelids or feel like your eyes make you look tired, then a blepharoplasty may be an effective way to restore a more alert, younger facial appearance. A blepharoplasty can also be performed as either an upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery.

For women who have trouble applying eye makeup because of sagging eyelids, eyelid surgery can remove deposits of fat and restore a youthful upper eye contour. For men and women, a blepharoplasty can make you look years younger while still looking natural. Women or men born without a crease on their upper eyelid may wish to consider double eyelid surgery.

This cosmetic procedure refreshes the eyelids by addressing:

  • Droopy eyelids
  • Puffy, baggy upper eyelids
  • Sagging lower eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Fine lines beneath your eyes
  • Dark Circles under the eyes
  • Eyelid sagging that obscures vision
  • Eyelid drooping the obscures the natural curve of the upper eyelid

The best way to know if a blepharoplasty is right for you and your goals, expectations and health, is to visit our experienced oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Ken Morgenstern.

Your consultation will be one-on-one with the surgeon. During your consultation for eyelid surgery Philadelphia Oculo Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Morgenstern will spend time with you to make sure you understand the procedure and have all the information you need to make a decision. They will perform an assessment of your eyelids and determine if blepharoplasty is the right procedure for the outcome you desire.

If you want to change any of the following, you are probably a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery and/or lower eyelid surgery:

  • You feel like the area around your eyes makes you look tired and aged.
  • You are unhappy with the way aging has affected your eyelids.
  • You have droopy eyelids
  • You want long-lasting rejuvenation results.
  • Excess upper eyelid skin that puffs over the curve of your eyelid.
  • Excess upper eyelid skin that sags over your eyelashes.
  • Generally puffy appearance above and below your eyes.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure, and as such it has certain risks and benefits, and requires time for recovery. These aspects and others will be discussed with you during your consultation. Our Philadelphia blepharoplasty patients state the results are long lasting, although you can experience a recurrence of sagging or fat deposits in the years down the road.

In addition to deciding if eyelid surgery is capable of achieving the changes you want to see, you and your surgeon can also discuss factors more closely related to the surgical procedure.

Questions you may want to ask yourself to start thinking about these factors are:

  • Do you have time to stay home from work and take time off from certain physical activities as part of recovery from eyelid surgery?
  • Do you have realistic expectations of what blepharoplasty can and cannot achieve?
  • Are you interested in the longest lasting, most effective options for facial rejuvenation, or do you feel a non-surgical temporary option may be a better fit?

Our oculo-facial surgeons will make sure you are healthy enough and that you don't have any disqualifying issues. We are wholly committed to delivering the best blepharoplasty Philadelphia has to offer, providing the results our patients want in a state-of-the-art setting, while minimizing risks and making sure you have all the information you need to have a successful recovery.

In preparation for the surgery itself, there are several steps that will be taken. You will undergo a physical examination to test your vision and the function of your eyes. Your eyelids will be measured and photographed to document their current condition and help Dr. Morgenstern plan the surgery.

In preparation for your blepharoplasty, we ask that you:

  • Stop using any NSAID medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for two weeks before and after surgery.
  • Quit smoking or using tobacco for several weeks before your surgery. Smoking can interfere with your ability to heal following surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home following your surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to care for you for the first night after your surgery.

Most people interested in blepharoplasty are curious about the recovery period. Like any surgical procedure, eyelid surgery does require you to take some time off from your normal routine.

Each person's recovery is slightly unique, and depends on whether you have upper eyelid surgery, a lower eyelid surgery or both. We will make sure you are provided with clear and thorough aftercare instructions so that you can enjoy a successful recovery and get back to normal as quickly as possible. You may need to stay home from work for a week or so. You may also have swelling and bruising around your eyes that will gradually go away.

Once you heal, you can enjoy a fresh, rejuvenated appearance. Philadelphia eyelid surgery patients say it has a rejuvenating effect on your entire face by removing sagging, puffy eyelid skin. Schedule a consult today to see if it will fit your expectations.
